Zone defense, columns, and Woman of the Hour
One of the doctors we saw at the hospital said now that we have three children, and are outnumbered, we have to start playing zone defense, instead of man-to-man, which made me laugh. It’s definitely going to be an adjustment!
I’m going to send out that column about the need for Democratic states to pick up the slack in funding cultivated-meat research. Feel free to use these newspaper email lists if you submit your own writing: https://slaughterfreeamerica.substack.com/p/how-to-write-letters-to-newspapers-6eb
Anyway, let’s do (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching and listening to lately.
Movie — The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. This is a funny film. Nicholas Cage stars as a fictionalized version of himself, who accepts an offer to attend the birthday of a wealthy fan, played by Pedro Pascal. Things go awry.
Movie — Woman of the Hour. In her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick portrays a struggling actress who encounters a serial killer on a 1970s dating show. It’s a very good crime thriller, tragically based on real-life events.
Music — The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan. The new biopic about the artist, which I’ve yet to see, made me want to revisit some of his music. It’s a tough call, but my favorite song on the album might be Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.
Music — Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. I’m not sure I’ve heard this collection of tracks as a record before, as opposed to individual MP3s. Like a Rolling Stone is the highlight for me. How does it feel to be on your own?
Sports — Knicks beat Nuggets, 122-112. After a dominant performance against the Grizzlies, that I missed and went back to watch, New York had another impressive win here. I want to see them play the Celtics and Cavaliers again.
Sports — Knicks lose to Lakers, 128-112. Los Angeles came ready to play in what was probably one of Lebron James’ final appearances at Madison Square Garden, his favorite road arena. OG Anunoby sprained his foot.
Sports — Knicks beat Rockets, 124-118. When did Houston become good again? I don’t really pay enough attention to the broader NBA. Despite trailing for much of the game, New York pulled this one out. Jalen Brunson scored 42 points.
