School, email lists, and Da 5 Bloods
The kids have started school. Hopefully, they will be settled in enough by next week I can protest. We’ll see!
Ten more states to go. Most recently, I updated my newspaper email lists for Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. When I’m done, I’ll post the completed lists here.
Anyway, it’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching and listening to lately.
Movie — Da 5 Bloods. This is a politicized heist film, directed by Spike Lee, featuring a terrific cast playing ex-soldiers who return to Vietnam in the present day. Nominally, they’re there to retrieve the remains of a fallen comrade, but that’s only part of the plan. They also intend to bring home gold they buried during the war. It’s an excellent movie.
Audiobook — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling. I’m not sure why Hogwarts parents keep sending their kids back to a school under constant threat, but it makes for a wonderful cozy-mystery series. For nostalgia’s sake, I’ve been listening to Jim Dale’s reading of the texts. I’m curious about Stephen Fry’s versions, though.
Podcast — The Word in Black and Red. In the early 2010s, the only way I was able to understand even a minimal amount of Karl Marx’s Capital was with the help of David Harvey’s lecture recordings. I’ve been looking for something similar with the Bible. I think I’ve found it here. I’m currently on Genesis 13.
