Letters, time-travel shenanigans and more
We’re having some work done at our house, that I need to be home for, so I don’t think I’m going to be able to protest. Instead, I’ll send out another letter. At this point, my last one has showed up in Massachusetts, Colorado and Iowa newspapers. My next one will make the animal-welfare case for increased public funding for cultivated-meat research. If you’d like to write your own letters, check out my email lists here: https://slaughterfreeamerica.substack.com/p/how-to-write-letters-to-newspapers-6eb
It’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching and reading lately.
Movie — No Hard Feelings. Jennifer Lawrence stars as a young woman hired by rich parents to date their introverted son. It’s formulaic, but pretty funny. The glimpses into off-season life in a beach town are interesting. I’m originally from Lake Placid, a tourist destination, however people travel there year round.
TV — Bodies. The Netflix limited series, based on a graphic novel by Si Spencer, is a time-traveling murder mystery, set in London during multiple eras. Amaka Okafor and others lead the large ensemble cast. I’m not sure if the show quite sticks the landing, but I loved it anyway.
Book — Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne. More time-travel shenanigans! I enjoyed this, even though it had the feel of high-quality fan fiction. I don’t know how involved J.K. Rowling actually was with the story’s development. It’s a play, so the text is a quick read.
Sports — Knicks lose to Wizards, 131-106. That wasn’t an ideal way to close out the preseason. Again, you shouldn’t read too much into games that don’t count, where the players aren’t going full speed and the coaches are experimenting. However, Washington is supposed to be pretty bad.
Meditation passage — O My God, Trinity Whom I Adore by Elizabeth of the Trinity. I don’t fully understand what the Trinity is or believe Jesus was uniquely divine. So when this passage references the concept, I read it merely as a synonym for God. As always, I’m choosing from selections chosen by Eknath Easwaran.
