Letters, Thor and other things
So far, my last letter has appeared in California, Indiana, Kentucky and Vermont newspapers. Unless some bigger news supplants it, my next letter will focus on President Joe Biden’s National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative, which sounds like it will include funding for cultivated-meat research. If you need some help getting started with your own letters, take a look at this:
It’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk, where I discuss some of the stuff I’ve been watching and reading lately.
Movie — Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who is also known as the Mighty Thor, team up to take down Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale. The film isn’t one of the better Marvel adventures, but it wasn’t as bad as some of the commentary about it led me to believe.
TV — Downton Abbey. This is a rewatch for my wife and me. Although, I never saw the last season and neither of us have seen the movies. Who knows if we’ll make it that far before something else catches our interest. I remember appreciating the chauffeur’s left-wing politics and thinking Maggie Smith was hilarious.
TV — Game of Thrones. I’ve found myself getting sucked into House of the Dragon, as dark and gross as it is, so I think I’ll go back and watch the original series after all. I don’t think I saw as much previously as I’d believed — maybe one or two seasons tops. I’m not a fan of all the fur clothing or horseback riding, among other things, but there is a reason this show was so popular.
Meditation Passage — Radiant Is the World Soul by Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook. I mostly have this one memorized. I might be adding new passages too quickly. My last few are still a little shaky. As always, I’m selecting from passages chosen by Eknath Easwaran.
