Letters, Lightyear and more
So far, my letter from last week has been published in Vermont, Mississippi and Kentucky newspapers. My letter for the coming week will probably make the environmental case for cultivated-meat research, unless there’s some news I can highlight. If you’d like to write your own letters, here are some tips:
Anyway, it’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk. Here are some of the things I’ve watched and read recently.
Film: Margin Call. This is a fictionalized account of the lead up to the 2008 financial crisis. A lot of the economic stuff was over my head, so I don’t know to what degree the movie’s interpretation of what caused the crash is accurate. But it seemed similar to what I’ve read. Good film.
Film: Prey. I wanted to enjoy this movie, but hunting and killing animals was so central and largely romanticized, it was hard to ignore. That said, Amber Midthunder seems destined to be a star. If Hollywood has any sense, they will put her in a bunch of other things.
Film: Lightyear. Within the Pixar universe, this is supposed to be the film that inspired the action figure featured in Toy Story. I was a little disappointed. I don’t know if it’s a problem with the script or that Chris Evans doesn’t have Tim Allen’s comedic chops, but I expected the movie to be funnier.
Meditation passage: This Morning I Pray, from the Ortha Nan Gaidheal. I’m starting to feel impatient, which is a good sign I need to memorize a new passage. I choose from those recommended by Eknath Easwaran, the spiritual teacher I’m following. This one apparently comes from the Gaelic Christian tradition.
