Letters, House of the Dragon, and basketball
My next letter will make the animal-welfare case for increased public funding for cultivated-meat research. If you’d like to send your own letters, check this out: https://slaughterfreeamerica.substack.com/p/how-to-write-letters-to-newspapers-6eb
Anyway, let’s do (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been reading and watching lately.
Book — Climbing the Blue Mountain by Eknath Easwaran. My thoughts have been sped up lately, something Easwaran warns about. I’ve been thinking of rereading his books to help me get back to basics. This one was new for me, though. It’s characteristically great.
Book — Animal Activism On and Off Screen edited by Claire Parkinson and Lara Herring. The collection analyzes the portrayal of activists in television and film. It’s very good, but I was hoping for more focus on fictional works. Most of the chapters discuss documentaries.
TV — House of the Dragon. The much-discussed Game of Thrones prequel is back for another season after a two year absence. I’m having a little trouble remembering who is who. Still, the series is a lot of fun. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke star as warring royals.
Sports — Knicks trade Bojan Bogdanovic, four unprotected first-round picks, a protected first-round pick, an unprotected pick swap and a second-round pick to the Nets for Mikal Bridges. Wow, I didn’t think Brooklyn was going to trade with their crosstown rival.
I guess New York made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. I’m beyond excited to see this more-complete version of the Nova Knicks, but the price seems pretty steep. Hopefully, New York doesn’t regret it. They’re officially all in now.
Sports — Knicks sign OG Anunoby to a five year, $212.5 million contract. This is a big offer even by the league’s standards. New York had to make it and is unquestionably better with the former Raptor. I just worry about how much he was injured this past season.
