Letters, Civil War and Santana
I’m hoping to protest next week, but things remain busy, so it might not happen. If I can’t go, I’ll try to send out a letter to the editor. The providers I’ve been using to send mass emails have been disabling my addresses a lot faster then they used to.
Anyway, it’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching and listening to recently.
Movie — Logan Lucky. This is a funny heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh. It’s a companion piece to Ocean’s Eleven. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver lead an ensemble cast as a pair of brothers seeking to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Movie — Civil War. Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller doesn’t make sense on a political level. California and Texas join together to secede the union? Still, the film provides an occasionally powerful critique of violence. Kirsten Dunst stars as a photo journalist.
Music — Fever to Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I started following the band around the release of their second EP. A friend with better internet connection downloaded all the group’s music on my behalf. Maps is the best song on the record.
Music — Supernatural by Santana. I’ve mentioned before I have special affection for albums from 1999. You really couldn’t have been alive that year without hearing this. It’s an undeniable classic. Smooth and Maria Maria stand out.
