Email lists, Only Murders, and more
I’m still plugging away at my newspaper email lists. Recently, I updated my lists for Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine and Maryland. When I’m done with all 50 states I’ll post them on the blog.
Anyway, let’s do (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching, reading and listening to lately.
Movie — The Menu. Maybe I don’t like horror films anymore? This just felt unpleasant. I couldn’t tell if it was meant to satirize the rich or annoying foodies and critics. If the former group, it makes them into victims, who the audience roots for, which would seem to undermine left-wing intention.
TV — Only Murders in the Building. My favorite multigenerational podcasting sleuths are back for another season of the comedic Hulu mystery. Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd and others join the cast. Steve Martin must be friends with everybody, because he gets the best guest stars.
Book — War by Other Means by Daniel Akst. The text provides an interesting history of conscientious objectors to World War II. It covers their desegregation efforts, unpaid labor and other activities while in prison. Many, but not all, of these pacifists were religiously motivated. Certain figures outside of prison are given significant coverage, like Dorothy Day.
Music — Trouble by Ray LaMontagne. “Hold You in My Arms,” a song I hadn’t heard in a while, was used in a TV show we’re watching. That inspired me to seek out the album it’s from, which I’ve never listened to as a whole. The record is beautiful.
