Email addresses, Animal Theology and A Quiet Place prequel
Things are busy here. I don’t think I’ll be able to protest until the kids are back in school. I plan on writing some letters to newspapers in the meantime. This week, though, I’m going to work on recovering my email addresses or making new ones. All my usual accounts are disabled, aside from the one I save for correspondence.
Anyway, let’s do (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching and listening to lately.
Book — Animal Theology by Andrew Linzey. The author is one of the most important names in Christian animal rights, so it’s about time I explored more of his work. The text is very good. I made a mental note of a bunch of religious theories and historical figures I want to look further into.
Movie — A Quiet Place: Day One. The prequel is a strong addition to the horror franchise about aliens who hunt with their hearing. Lupita Nyong'o stars as a terminally-ill patient who is trapped in New York City when the creatures attack. Beyond the scares, the film is a meditation on mortality.
TV — Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. These aren’t my favorite hours in Stars Hallow, but I’m glad they exist. Hopefully, we’ll get another season of the revival at some point. My wife and I have a Luke’s Diner sign in our kitchen. The next bit of merchandise I’d like is something Hep Alien related.
Music — Begin to Hope (Deluxe edition with iTunes/Amazon bonus tracks) by Regina Spektor. I’ve written about my appreciation of this artist before. Her songs are weird, whimsical, romantic and melancholy. Samson is probably the highlight of the album. I’ve always loved the description of stars as ‘just old light.’ I’m not sure why.
Podcast — Why Is This Happening? Chris Hayes does long-form interviews here that wouldn’t fit on his MSNBC program. I dip in if there’s a guest or subject that particularly interests me. I enjoyed the recent conversation with John Ganz about his book. I’m a fan of the Unpopular Front blogger.
