Cultivated pet food, letters and Thursday Murder Club
I’ve been a little hesitant to discuss cultivated pet food in my letters. I worry it could stigmatize cellular agriculture if that’s someone’s introduction to the concept. You know, “That’s just for cats and dogs.” Still, I wasn’t sure what else to write about this week and didn’t want to overthink things.
My next one will highlight Meatly producing the first cans of cultivated cat food. The company hopes these will be approved for sale in the United Kingdom. As always, I’ll transition into an argument for increased public funding for research. Anyway, let’s do (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been listening to, reading and watching lately.
Audiobook — The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. I loved this. Basically, members of a British retirement community try to solve a local homicide. It’s a comedic mystery with a tender heart. Lesley Manville’s narration is great. Apparently, Steven Spielberg is adapting the title into a film.
Book — Animals and Capital by Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel. It’s been a while since I’ve tried to dig into a dense Marxist text. Life is short, and I’ve realized theory is not my strong suit. There was a lot I didn’t understand here. Still, this seems like a valuable contribution to the debate of how animals might be incorporated into Marxism.
Sports — Knicks beat Warriors, 119-112. OG Anunoby was out again. Jalen Brunson led all scorers, but Miles McBride had a career-high 29 points. Josh Hart played the entire game and McBride almost did as well. Coach Tom Thibodeau is a madman. Hopefully, it doesn’t lead to any more injuries.
Sports — Knicks lose to Nuggets, 113-100. The final score doesn’t really show it, but despite being down three starters, this was a very winnable match for New York. I haven’t been super impressed with what I’ve seen of the defending champions. Obviously, the Knicks beat them by 38 points in January.
Sports — Knicks beat Nets, 105-93. The game was surprisingly competitive until the fourth quarter, when New York took control. Brunson’s shooting was off. Thankfully, Donte DiVincenzo and McBride stepped up. McBride played all 48 minutes. It’s been cool to see him develop.
