Columns, The Fall Guy and Nyjah Huston
This week I’m going to send out that column where I interviewed Asher Smith to my national, California and Florida email lists. If you’d like to send out your own letters to newspapers, give this a look: https://slaughterfreeamerica.substack.com/p/how-to-write-letters-to-newspapers-6eb
Anyway, it’s time for (Cell) Culture Talk. Here’s what I’ve been watching lately.
Movie — The Fall Guy. This action comedy is a lot of fun. Ryan Gosling stars as a stuntman working on a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. Together, they get dragged into some real-life hijinks when the production’s lead actor goes missing.
Movie — Dune: Part Two. Like the first film in the series, the second is well made, but not my cup of tea. I recognize I’m an outlier on the subject. With a few exceptions, the tone just feels too grim. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya star in the science-fiction epic.
Movie — Twisters. I vaguely recall watching the original flick when it came out on VHS. The new one is a pretty good disaster film. While formulaic, it features a number of exciting tornado scenes. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell play rival storm chasers.
TV — When Calls the Heart. This is a sweet show about a school teacher in a Canadian mining town, circa the 1910s. Erin Krakow plays the lead role. My wife and I watched a couple of seasons a while back, but then the series left the streaming service we were using.
YouTube — NIKE SB | Nyjah Huston | Need That. I don’t skate, however I find skateboarding videos super relaxing. I turn off my brain and go along for the ride. From what I understand, Huston is one of the best in the sport. He makes everything look easy and smooth.
Music — Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix. This was the first CD I owned by the rock icon. The money I wasted on a physical-media collection is unreal. It all became worthless due to filesharing. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is my favorite track here.
